SUMMER UNDER THE STARS: DOROTHY MCGUIRE

Dorothy McGuire makes her SUTS debut with 12 films including the TCM premiere of Mother Didn’t Tell Me.

Dorothy McGuire was born on June 14, 1916, to Thomas and Isabelle McGuire.  She made her stage debut at age 13 at a local community playhouse in Omaha, Nebraska.  Her co-star was Henry Fonda.  She appeared in summer stock before moving to New York.  McGuire was on the radio and on stage until receiving her breakthrough role in the play Claudia.  She reprised her role in the film adaptation, her film debut.

Dorothy McGuire wanted to be an actress, not a star.  She received her only Oscar nomination in 1947’s Gentleman’s Agreement.  She also developed the La Jolla Playhouse with friend and Men co-star Gregory Peck.  By 1956, McGuire permanently switched to “mom” roles starting with Friendly Persuasion, co-starring Gary Cooper, followed by her first Disney film, Old Yeller.  Later in her career, Dorothy moved to television.   Dorothy McGuire died two days after 9/11 at the age of 85.
