SUMMER UNDER THE STARS: FRANCHOT TONE
August 8, 2017

Tone has his first SUTS day with 13 movies, 2 of which are TCM premieres: 1942’s The Lady Takes a Flyer and 1958’s Uncle Vanya.  I only have two picks today because I haven’t seen many of Tone’s films.  His personal life is much more interesting.  He was the second of Joan Crawford’s four husbands and in the early 1950s, Tone was involved in a love triangle with actress Barbara Payton and actor Tom Neal which culminated in Neal beating the crap out of Tone, resulting in him getting plastic surgery to fix his broken nose.

Anyway, on with today’s picks!

Mariah’s Picks

Five Graves to Cairo (1943-3:30 pm/2:30 pm c)

The great Billy Wilder’s second directorial effort where British corporal Tone goes undercover to infiltrate Erwin Rommel’s command.  Rommel is played by former director Erich von Stroheim.

Mutiny on the Bounty (1935-5:30 pm/4:30 pm c)

Tone earned his only Oscar nomination in this adaptation of 1932 novel.  Clark Gable had to shave off his famous mustache for the role of Mr. Christian.
